ALFONSO, CARLO

Carlo Alfonso was born on 4 September, 1984 in the Philippines and moved to Spokane Valley in 1997 with his mother. He attended Seth Woodard Elementary, Centennial Middle School and graduated from West Valley High School. Alfonso worked for Northern Quest Casino before he joined the Army.  His sacrifice was particularly poignant because Alfonso was not a citizen when he swore to defend the U.S. Constitution. According to relatives, Alfonso’s two major goals were to be a soldier and to become an American citizen. He will gain his citizenship posthumously. 

CPL Alfonso joined the US Army in 2006 where he would go on to become a combat engineer. After briefly serving as a recruiter at the Spokane Valley Mall, he was transferred to Baumholder, Germany, and then to Iraq for a 15-month combat tour. CPL Alfonso was assigned to the 40th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division. 

CPL Alfson died on Aug. 26, 2005 as a result of the injuries he sustained when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in Sadr City, Iraq. 

Carlo is survived by his longtime sweetheart, and wife, Rosemarie, their son Kyle, his mother, Florencia Jones, his father, Carlito Alfonso, siblings Deseree and Rodel, stepfather, Lee Davis, and members of his extended family. 

CPL Alfonso’s medals include: the Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and the Combat Action Badge.
