BELL, RYAN

Ryan M. Bell was a 2003 honors graduate from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville Georgia. While at the Academy he played baseball, football, and helped his wrestling team win the state championship. His father said he enjoyed outdoor recreation, singing, dancing and watching sports. “He was a walking sports encyclopedia,” Michael Bell said. 

SPC Bell joined the Army in 2004, and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C., in January 2005. He was a member of Company C, 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team. Before he was deployed to Iraq, he served with his unit in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. "Bell truly is a hero that represents all that is great about America," said his commander, Capt. Eugene Farris. 

SPC Bell, and five other soldiers were killed on March 5, 2007 when improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicles while they were on patrol near Samarra, Iraq. 

Ryan had many college scholarship offers at the Academy; however, he decided to join the Army, hoping his training and GI bill would help him become a doctor. 

Despite the fact that he and his dad were already living in a tepee during a summer trip into the woods, Ryan still suggested to his father one morning: "Let's go camping!".  "He was a goofy little kid," said his dad, but "My son ended up being a very fine young man." He further went on to say, “there’s no regrets at this end,” Michael Bell said. “He was a responsible young man, he was sensible, he knew what he wanted to do with his life.” 

Bell is survived by his wife, Terri, of Fayetteville, N.C.; mother Sheryl Vickery, of Spokane; father, and stepmother Virginia Bell, of Colville.
