BENSON, ROBERT

Robert “Bobby” T. Benson was born July 3,1983 in Coeur D’Alene Idaho and grew up in Post Falls prior to moving to Spokane where he graduated from North Central High School in 2001.  

In July 2001, shortly after graduation, Bobby enlisted in the Army and was sent to Fort Knox Kentucky where he attended bootcamp, and Advanced Individual Training school to become a Tanker.     

Bobby enjoyed playing sports, fishing for trout and salmon, four-wheeling, and spending time with his friends and family out on the lake. Bobby, often known as the clown of the group, enjoyed making everyone laugh and lightening the mood. In December 2002, he married his high school sweetheart, Aimee Hiatt.  

After training, Specialist Benson was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 35th Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division located at Smith Barracks Germany. According to Sean Sorin, a fellow Soldier, Specialist Benson “was a good man and an excellent Soldier and will not be forgotten”.  

Specialist Benson died on November 4, 2003, due to a non-hostile gunshot wound sustained at a checkpoint in Iraq. He was one of the first Spokane area casualties of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
