Fallen Story
Bryan A. Burgess was born on 23 April, 1981 and was a resident of Cleburne, TX and was a 1999 graduate of Cleburne High School where he excelled as an athlete in soccer, baseball and football, and ran track, and participated in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for all four years. Before enlisting in the United States Army, Bryan completed one year of schooling at Hill College.
Bryan joined the Army in 2003 to serve as an Infantryman. After Boot Camp he was stationed at Fort Lewis Washington, then Grafenwoehr, Germany, and finally at Fort Campbell, KY with the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). SSG Burgess was known for his strong will and ability to lead by example. He had a desire to prevent any future attacks on America and its citizens. SSG Burgess’s goal was to keep his family safe and ensure they could enjoy their freedom. He was loved by his men and respected by his commanders, and now he is honored by his family.
SSG Burgess deployed twice to Iraq and had about 26 days remaining on his deployment to Afghanistan when he was killed on 29 March, 2011 as the result of a small arms fire attack in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. Bryan's final and fatal mission was captured in the ABC documentary The Hornet's Nest.
SSG Burgess had a way of replenishing his always present energy. It is believed that the Sesame Street character Cookie Monster was based off of him. He loved cookies, said one of his fellow Soldiers. No cookies were safe, even if a cookie was on the way to your mouth, he would take it. Even the First Sergeants cookies weren’t safe.
Bryan was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star of Valor for actions in November 2010. He also earned several awards and commendations, including the Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal.
