CARRIKER, CASEY

Casey S. Carriker was born on August 29, 1986 and was a long-time resident of Hoquiam, Washington, where he would go on to graduate from Hoquiam High School in 2005. Growing up, Casey was an avid runner and started preparing for basic training by running everyday with is backpack full of books, “half filled with schoolbooks the other with whatever bizarre subject he was interested in”, according to his father Terry Carriker.  Growing up, Casey would question everything, which could get him into trouble sometimes. He was interested in philosophy, ethics, human behavior, and how people think and feel. 

Brock Maxfield, the Hoquiam High School vice principal, recalls that Casey “always had a book with him as he walked through the halls at school” be it a novel or a book on philosophy. He further stated, "He was a good kid."" 

PFC Carriker often talked about joining the military when he graduated with the possibility of going into the Intelligence field. PFC Carriker enlisted in the U.S. Army around his 18th birthday, and according to Maxfield, “he was excited about it…He wanted to go into special forces. He really wanted to learn other languages.” 

 

Carriker, who excelled in welding at school, came back to visit the school after he joined the Army. Maxfield said there was quite a contrast between the long hair he sported in high school — one day, he even dressed up as Jesus — and his new, short military haircut. 

PFC Carriker was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. PFC Carriker died on June 13 2007 in Kirkuk, Iraq, from injuries sustained in a non-combat-related incident. 

His awards included the Combat Infantryman Badge. 

Casey is survived by his mother, Sandra Beaudry, and stepmother, Pammy Carriker.
