JASSO, LEANDRO

Leandro “Lando” Jasso was born on June 19, 1993 in Brewster WA and in September met his adoptive family and became a longtime resident of Leavenworth WA. In 2011-2012 he completed his cycle in the Washington State Youth Academy and returned to complete his senior year at Cascade High School where he played football and wrestled before graduating in 2012.  

Lando was very active growing up as he played the tuba in the band, took piano, violin, and cello lessons. Also, he played soccer, swam with the Wenatchee Valley Summer Swim League, skied, snowboarded at Ski Hill, and was active in Scouts through Pack 28 and Troop 28, where he earned his Life rank. 

Upon graduation, SGT Jasso enlisted in the U.S. Army and completed basic training, One Station Unit Training as an Infantryman and Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, GA. Following his initial training, he successfully completed the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program 1 and was assigned to 2nd Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Joint Base Lewis-McChord where he served as an Assistant Machine Gunner, Automatic Rifleman, and Grenadier.   

SGT Jasso attended and graduated from Ranger School in 2016 and was promoted to Sergeant later that year. He served as a rifleman in Delta company from July 2013 to December 2016. He then served as an automatic rifleman and Ranger Team Leader in Alpha Company from December 2016 to November 24, 2018. 

SGT Jasso was killed in action from small arms fire on 24 November 2018 after completing a second dangerous night raid mission which targeted high value Al-Qaida leadership. Lando was on his third combat deployment.  

Sgt. Jasso’s military awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Ranger Tab, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Expert Infantryman’s Badge and Expert Rifle Marksmanship Badge.
