VINNEDGE, PHILLIP DAVID

Phillip D. Vinnedge was born on February 22, 1991 in Spokane Washington to Dave and Julie Vinnedge. In 1996, at the age of 5, Phillip moved to St. Charles Missouri and in 2009 graduated from Francis Howell Central High School, while also attending Lewis & Clark Technical School for two years, where he was named student of the year in the school’s welding program.  

Wanting to be a Marine ever since September 11, 2001, Phillip enlisted in the Marine Corps in September 2009. Wanting to have the toughest job the Marine Corps had, he enlisted as an Infantryman and was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton California, as an Anti-Tank Missileman, better known as a “TOW” gunner.  

In September of 2010, LCpl Vinnedge’s battalion was deployed to Sangin, Afghanistan for his first deployment. Two weeks later, on October 13th, 2010 LCpl Vinnedge was driving the lead vehicle, a MATV (a Humvee on steroids), on a security patrol. Also in the vehicle were Cpl Justin Cain, LCpl Victor Dew, and LCpl Joe Rodewald. While crossing the Sangin Wadi (dry riverbed) a large IED was remotely detonated, killing all 4 instantly. 

Phillip was a Marine, a Boy Scout, an Order of the Arrow member, a wrestler, a skydiver, a welder, a member of a trap shooting club, a brother to Cory and Jason, a friend, and a son. Phillip loved life, and he loved challenges. From simple childhood bets and dares to personal goals and accomplishments, Phillip never backed down from a challenge. Despite his determination and frequent success, Phillip never sought accolades or recognition for his accomplishments, instead being content with reaching his own personal goals. 

Philip was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. In June of 2014 the facility of the United States Postal Service in Cottleville, MO. was formally designated as the “Lance Corporal Phillip Vinnedge Post Office” in his honor. LCpl Vinnedge is laid to rest at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis County, Missouri.
