WARD, ERIC

 

Eric L. Ward was born on 17 August 1990 in Fairfax VA to Steven Ward and Monica McNeal. Eric moved to Washington and would go on to graduate from Mt. Si. High School in Snoqualmie in 2008 and would put college on hold to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps. From the start, Eric immediately radiated a spirit of serenity. Those who knew him cherished his genuine ability to make you laugh, even through the most difficult of times. His strength continues to watch over his friends and family, and Eric stands proudly beside them as a son, a brother, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin, a lover, a friend, and a U.S. Marine.  

LCpl Ward enlisted in the Marines Corps at the age of 17, requiring his mother’s signature, continuing a 4th generation legacy of Marines in his family. After boot camp, LCpl ward would go to the School of Infantry where he would become a Infantry Machine Gunner. Upon completion of training, he was assigned to Weapons Company, 2d Bn, 2nd Marines, (RCT-7, MEB-A FWD) 2nd Marine Division, at Camp LeJeune NC.  

From the moment he opened his eyes each morning, LCpl Ward surged with vivacious life and energy. He was a morning person and could almost always be found enjoying a hearty breakfast with his family at the break of dawn. Even in combat, those who loved him spoke of the life and joy which he brought to every situation.  

LCpl Ward was the kind of man who always kept his fellow Marines laughing no matter how difficult the situation. He had such joy in life that others could not help but be affected in a positive way. Besides his humor, Eric was known for giving nature.  

Each year while in school, he would buy extra school supplies to give to those who were unable to buy their own. This proud but kind young man with the piercing blue eyes also thought of his fellow Marines. Eric told his folks about how some of the guys were less fortunate than him. Not all of them came from a strong, loving and supportive family so he wanted to help them. Eric told his dad, "Some of these guys don't have everything they need." He enlisted his family in helping him get much needed gear for his brother Marines. 

While his life may have been extinguished in a moment, nothing can extinguish the joy he will always bring this world. He was family to so many and carried a presence that people gravitated to. He was determined and loyal. He defined honor as if he etched it into existence with his own hands.  

Eric lived a full life in a short 19 years. He traveled the world, explored much of the country, and experienced great successes in friendships and family. He was a natural athletic leader and lived a life full of adventure and experience. He formed bonds stronger than some see in a lifetime and was fortunate enough to even fall in love.  

LCpl Ward was killed on 21 February 2010 while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  

 LCpl Ward’s awards include: Purple Heart, Marine Corps Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the NATO Medal (ISAF). 

Eric is laid to rest at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Arlington County, VA, in Section 60, Site 9068.
